Vast and remarkable set of botanical drawings from nature, probably composed in order to make an engraved collection, probably unpublished. The author, Guéroult du Pas (1654-1740), a painter and aquafortist from Toulon, had been a civil engineer. He started his career as an engraver late, as the works known about him do not date back to 1708, when he obtained a privilege from the king. He is best known for his marine plates and views of Paris and its surroundings. The only document relating to botany that we have found in inventories and online catalogues is a "List of plants drawn in life-size by P.-J. Guéroult du Pas, former engineer in Alençon. 1740" (5 ff. manuscripts from the Jussieu collection, kept at the Natural History Museum).
Our drawn herbarium thus sheds new light on the work of this unknown artist.
