BRUGES - MANUSCRIPT CADASTRAL ATLAS] H. DECOCK - "Cadastral atlas of the properties of Mr Boyaval du Jardin Jules, owner in Bruges, located in the provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders and Zeeland". [Bruges, ca 1870]. In Italian style broadside (53 x 69 cm), full contemporary dark brown chagrin, triple framed with gilt and cold fillets with gilt spandrels, large central diamond-shaped ornament composed of cold scrolls with gilt title to the upper board, smooth gilt spine, gilt edges (binding broken and very faded with a few small leather tears). Title, 20 double-page plans in pen and ink and watercolour highlights. Monumental work by a surveyor of the Bruges land register, whose signature, surrounded by a laurel wreath, appears on the title, calligraphically and very nicely decorated with a floral frame with two charming miniatures depicting a country landscape and a plough. The properties mapped are located in the municipalities of Bruges (Van Eyck square and Spinola quay), Beerst, Langemarck, Passendale, Oostkamp, Oudenburg, Zandvoorde, Pervyse, Lampernisse, Leffinge, Slypse, Stuivekenskerke, Vladslo, St. Laurent, Aardenburg, Heille, Oostburg, Kaaskerke... With 4 doc. on loose-leaf, including 1 plan drawn on tracing paper and enhanced with watercolour. Jules Boyaval (1814-1879), doctor of law at the University of Ghent, tax official. A member of the liberal party, he was successively town councillor, alderman and burgomaster of Bruges (1854-1876). He was also senator of the district (1859-1867, 1878-1879). He had married Julie Du Jardin, from an important family of bankers in Bruges. Yellowed paper, wetness, spotting and soiling mainly at the margins, edges chipped.
