[ARCHIVES - DIPLOMACY] Gennaro de MEROLLA - Set of archival documents relating to Gennaro de Merolla, consul general of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and his son Ernest, secretary of the legation of the said kingdom.
Late 18th - 19th c. In Italian, Portuguese, French. A few stains, spots and deficiencies, not serious. Good general condition.
COMPRISES:
- 4 letters patent or credentials for Gennaro de MORELLA, consul general in Brazil, of which 2 signed by King Ferdinand II (1832, 1837) and 2 signed by the regency authority of the young Pedro II, emperor of Brazil (1832-1838). 3 doc. on vellum, 1 on paper, with seals under paper (2 of which attached to a ribbon with the colors of Brazil).
- 4 patents or certificates of decorations for G. de Morella among which: medal of honor to the lieutenant of the "Guardia di Sicurezza Interna" (Naples, 1815); medal of the order of the merit (Naples, 1816), bifeuillet in-f° of printed paper with mentions and sign. ms.); gold cross of the sacred and military order of Saint-Georges (Naples, 1820), etc.
- Indulgence of the pope Grégoire XVI. Rome, March 6, 1835. On vellum, seal under paper.
- [Ernest de MORELLA] - Album of 221 visiting cards of diplomats and expatriates of all countries, as well as Brazilian notables + 1 invitation to dinner of the French ambassador (1855), - 2 portraits: count Charles de Breteuil, secretary of the French legation (black pencil and wash on f. 1 view of the Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro (graphite with white chalk highlights on buff-colored paper, unsigned),- 1 view of the Guanabara Bay (?) with sailboat and fisherman's boat (graphite, white chalk and blue and pink wash on oval cardboard, pasted). Middle 19th c. Maps on porcelain cardboard, mounted on 22 sheets of bristol board, with a few annotations from the epoch. In an oblong album in-8°, burgundy chagrined cardboard decorated with cold, gilded title on the cover, gilt tr. Spine missing.
Gennaro, knight of Merolla (1793-1850), was sent to Brazil in 1832, without his wife and son, as consul general in Rio de Janeiro. He helped arrange the marriage of the young emperor Pedro II to Princess Theresa Christina, sister of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies. He did not leave Brazil until his death in 1850. His son Ernest (1827-c. 1883), who in the absence of his father had lived with his mother with his grandfather Jean-Baptiste de Merolla, then in Paris. In 1850 he was sent as secretary to the legation to assist his father, who was ill and died the same year. Ernest was appointed in his place. In 1852, he was sent as secretary of legation to Brussels, then in 1858 to Paris, as chargé d'affaires of the legation, still of the Two Sicilies. In 1863, he held the same position in Dresden, then was appointed vice-consul of Italy in Baltimore in 1882. He had married around 1860 Marie-Victoire de Laska, originally from Dresden, who died in Brussels in 1865. Sources : well documented genealogical records on Geneanet.
