Claude-Adrien HELVETIUS - Complete works. New edition, corrected & enlarged on the author's manuscripts, with his life & his portrait. London [i.e. Bouillon, Société typographique], 1780-1781. 5 volumes in-8, contemporary blond half calf with small corners, mastic paper boards, five-ribbed spine, red and green morocco title and greefs (spines rubbed, 1 upper cap torn off). cxv, 282; [4], 448; [4], 384; [4], viii, 398; [2], 407 pp. Title in black. Portrait of the author by Vanloo and engraved by V. D. P. Title in black. Clandestine edition prepared in Paris by Abbé Lefebvre de La Roche, a secularized Benedictine, trusted man of Helvétius and "legatee of his manuscripts". The printing extended from 1779 to 1781. In the in-8° edition (published the same year as the in-4° edition in 2 vols.), there are copies with the titles in red and black, all dated 1781. The others, including ours, have black titles dated 1780 (vols. I-II) and 1781 (III-V). Here, curiously, the title of vol. V is marked "Tome premier" but is indeed dated 1781. Bibliogr. : D. Smith, Bibliography of the writings of Helvetius, O5; J. Vercruysse, "Helvétius imprimé à Bouillon," in Le livre & l'estampe, XXXIII, 127, 1987, pp. 7-33. Scattered spotting and browning, small perforation of pp. 375-376 of vol. 3, a few pale rings of wetness passim.
