Voltaire had sent the manuscript of this work to M. d'Argenson, M. de Richelieu and Mme de Pompadour; following a theft, the manuscript intended for the duke of Richelieu was sold to the bookseller Saillant and printed by Prieur. Seized at the request of Voltaire, the edition was locked up in the Bastille, then returned to the booksellers by Malesherbes [...]. The stolen manuscript being incomplete, the text stops after the account of the battle of Fontenoy, whereas the complete manuscript went until the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. Bengesco, I, 1232. Barbier, II, 699.
