Hermann SCHARLES attributed to Wolfgang-Adam or Rodolphe TÖPFFER - The handsome Nick. German fantasy tale. French and German legenda [sic]. Paris, Aubert, s.d. [ca. 1851]. In-4 in Italian style, full white paperback, title in a gilt and red lettering frame (small tear at the tail of the upper jaw, slightly blunt corners). [28] leaves. Title and 28 black lithographed plates. Legend of the plates in German and French. Freckles. Rare. "ParisMuséesCollections" attributes this album to Adam Töpffer (Geneva, 1766 - Geneva, 1847), Swiss painter, father of Rodolphe Töpffer. A notice in Charles Philippon's "Avis du commerce illustrés" attributes the work to "a German artist" (1858, no. 9). According to another authorized notice, the Maison Aubert was reputed to have pirated many albums, including those of Rodolphe Töpffer. It is therefore likely that Hermann Scharles was a purely fictitious author.
