[Elizabeth Anne Mould, Lady BLOUNT - Adrian Galilio, or a So - Lot 296
[Elizabeth Anne Mould, Lady BLOUNT - Adrian Galilio, or a Song Writer's Story. Malvern, London, New York, "The Faith Press", 1898. In-4°: 138, [4] pp. plates and notated music. Publisher's burgundy basane binding, gilt framing on boards, smooth spine. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, four plates and six sheets of musical scores. First edition, copy enriched with a signed autograph letter from the author to Princess Karadja. An allegorical novel combining prose, verse and song, Adrian Galilio is one of the most singular works by Lady Elizabeth Blount (1850-1935), poet, spiritualist and Flat Earth Society activist. Founder of the Universal Zetetic Society, she sought to reconcile Christian faith, mysticism and the rejection of modern scientific discoveries. This book, halfway between religious poem and visionary tale, illustrates the mystical-metaphysical vein typical of British fin-de-siècle eccentrics. A rare testimony to this emblematic figure of Anglo-Victorian "literary madmen", whose writings oscillate between prophetic fervor and poetic utopia. The dedicatee, Swedish writer and mystic Princess Marie Louise Eugénie Karadja (1868-1943), was the author of spiritualist poems (Poems, 1898; From the Kingdom of the Spirit, 1902). Close to British spiritualist and theosophical circles, she shared with Lady Blount a marked interest in metaphysical speculation and occult beliefs.
