Louis LE COMTE, S. J. - New memoirs on the present state of China. Volume one [- second]. Third edition.
Paris, Jean Anisson, 1697. 2 volumes in-12, contemporary brown calf, spine flory with five nerves, title and appendices (small angular lack on a first plate).
[2], [32], 410; [4], 435, [9] pp. 22 plates.
Illustrations include: 1 portrait of the emperor Cam-Hy in frontispiece, 1 folding table "of all the words that make up the Chinese language", 18 plates, 3 of which are folding (the emperor's throne, the Peking observatory, several scientific plates including an armillary sphere and a globe, Gregory Lopez (A-Lou in cbinese), the first Chinese bishop of the Dominican order).
Although written in epistolary form, Le Comte (1655-1728), of the Jesuit order, warns the reader in his epistle addressed to Louis XIV and recommends him to see in it the "portrait of the prince of the East". Each chapter was addressed to a different personality. In his 2nd letter to the Duchess of Nemours, concerning the manner in which Emperor Cam-Hy received the Jesuits in Peking and their impression of that city, Le Comte pays a heartfelt tribute to the Belgian Jesuit, Ferdinand Verbiest (Pittem, 1623 - Peking, 1688), mathematician and astronomer.
