VIOLET NOZIÈRES. Brussels, Nicolas Flamel, (1933). In-8 square, stapled, illustrated cover, uncut. FIRST EDITION. In the preface to the 1991 reprint, José Pierre states that Mesens founded his publishing house especially for the publication of this book in order to avoid possible legal proceedings. The book will be seized by the French customs. Copies will only reach France at the drop of a hat, by postal mailings addressed to private individuals who will forward them to the critics. On the initiative of Mesens, a collective homage of the surrealists to "Viol-ette" Nozières who "had started his odyssey well by killing his father, an incestuous rapist" and who "after long prisons, ended it very badly in the arms of the Holy Church" [sic]Louis Scutenaire. Without a doubt, one of the most significant interventions of the Surrealists in the 1930s, who, by taking up the girl's cause, proved to be faithful to the attitude they had previously adopted towards other murderers such as Germaine Breton and the Papin sisters. This surrealist stance shows the extent to which the movement legitimizes all forms of revolt. Cfr. Dictionnaire général du surréalisme, p. 424. Contains eight poems by Breton, Char, Eluard, Henry, Mesens, ... each illustrated with a drawing by Dali, Tanguy, Ernst . .. Cover illustrated with a photomontage by Man Ray . The numbered edition has been limited to 20 copies. Uncut copy in mint condition.
