[YPRES] CHAMBER OF FURNISH RHETHORY - Den Olyf-Krans van Astrée toegewijd aan Zijne Keizerlyke, en Koninglyke Majesteit Josephus den II.
30 November (or December? "Herfst-maend") 1787.
Manuscript. 75 x 53.5 cm. Manuscript in brown ink, illustrated with coloured coats of arms and an olive tree frieze.
It is clearly an anti-Josephist satirical text composed in 1787, at the beginning of the movement of resistance to the Emperor's reforms, which was to lead to the "Brabant Revolution" of 1789.
Note this very pungent and funny detail: the snakes that form the name Josephus.
The title refers to Greek mythology. The olive wreath is the prize that originally rewarded the winners of the ancient Olympic Games and Astraeus, daughter of Zeus and Themis, is a symbol of Justice, a theme highlighted in this spade addressed to the emperor.
The document has been placed under matting, a few restorations and small lacks including unfortunately the last line(s) of text.
RARE AND BEAUTIFUL DOCUMENT.
