VOLTAIRE - Complete works. Volume One [- LXX]. Kehl, de l'Imprimerie de la Société littéraire-typographique, 1785-1789. 70 volumes in-8, binding signed by Bozérian (at the end of the spine of volume I) glazed blond calf, gilt garland and fillets framing the covers, richly decorated smooth spine, two brown morocco title pieces, small red morocco pastille for the tomaison, gilt edges (four volumes were subsequently bound by another craftsman). A wide-margined copy of this famous edition known as the Beaumarchais edition. Our copy is illustrated with 93 figures and 19 portraits, as well as the portrait of Frederick William, Prince of Prussia (in the frontispiece of volume 64) and the bust of Voltaire. The copy also contains 112 engravings of Renouard's suite as well as 46 portraits engraved by Saint Aubin, plus 4 portraits bearing no mention, a frontispiece "Il ôte aux Nations le bandeau de l'erreur" engraved by Croustelle, a plan of the Tartars' camp (volume 24) and 14 physics plates. Volume 70 includes the illustrated double plate of Voltaire's works. In our copy, volume 68 forms volume II of the correspondence of the King of Prussia instead of the correspondence of volume I to d'Alembert. One volume is therefore missing and another is in duplicate. Ex-libris with arms and motto of the Wright Baronet of South Carolina, dating back to James (1716-1785), 1st baronet created in 1722, colonial governor of the state of Georgia.
