F. BIANCONI - Special map of China.
Paris, Librairie Armand Colin, s.d. [Early 20th century.]
632 x 780 mm (including margins). Full-colour canvas card. 2 cartridges including the map of Takou in Beijing.
"China, if it remains what it is, i.e. a huge homogeneous country with a population much larger than that of Europe and if, on the other hand, its military armaments are not hindered, will, in about 20 years' time, be predominant in Asia and, moreover, a serious danger for Europe itself. In order to avoid this terrible eventuality now that the occasion is propitious, we can divide China and, in order to prevent any cohesion which would be dangerous, place the various territorial parts of this too vast Empire under the Protectorate or the Control of each of the Great Powers [...] The Yangtze River, like the Danube in Europe, must be declared international, with residence of the European Commission in Shanghai or Hankéou." Printed text on the card.
