Isidore-Stanislas HELMAN - Historical summary of the main features of the life of Confucius, the famous Chinese philosopher. Decorated with 24 prints in 4°. Engraved by Helman, after original drawings from China sent to Paris for Fr. Amiot, missionary in Peking [...]. Memorable facts of the emperors of China from the Chinese Annals... Paris, chez l'Auteur and Ponce, s.d. [c. 1788]. 2 books bound in one volume in-4, binding signed by SIMIER, red half-marocco with small corners, red paper covers, spine decorated with five nerves. Title, [24] sheets, 24 plates. Title, dedication, [24] sheets, 24 plates. Combination of two books entirely engraved according to the original drawings from Mr. Bertin's office. The plates of "Memorable Facts..." are a reduction of the large plates engraved after the drawings of Jesuit Father Attiret, on the order of the Emperor of China and through the Indian Company. It was Cochin who was charged by M. de Martigny, to direct the engraving of these plates which was entrusted to Aliamet, Choffard, Le Bas, Née, Prévost and A. de Saint-Aubin. As the print run was strictly reserved for China, there were only a few remaining prints in Europe, and it was from them that Helman made his boards. Wide margin copy. First title pitted and browned, some pitting or freckling in the first work. Cordier, BS, 587, 667; Cohen, 479.
