ITALY - DRAWINGS] NAPLES. 2 collections of views of Naples. 1820 & ca. 1825. In modern aubergine half morocco slipcase, marbled paper boards, five-ribbed spine, gilt title. 1. Henriette CAMPBELL - "Views of Naples". Naples, 1820. In-16 Italian style (15 x 22 cm); 14 pen-and-ink and grey wash drawings, enhanced with watercolours and framed with a double black fillet (11 x 18 cm), captioned at the bottom in pen, protected by a serpente (3 serpentes missing, foxing and a few marginal stains, otherwise very fresh drawings). Contemporary purple paste-down paper boards, gilt scroll around the boards, gilt fleuron in the centre, title in gilt lettering on the upper board, smooth compartmentalized gilt spine decorated with a repeated gilt flower (small traces of wear and creases). Charming and picturesque collection of views of Naples, animated with characters, finely drawn and coloured. Collections of this kind were sold to tourists by local artists, but this one was probably executed by a British tourist, an amateur artist but not without talent, whose name appears, along with the place and date, on the back cover. The captions, in English, are by the same hand. She has nicely represented the high places of Neapolitan tourism ("Royal Palace", "Caramanica Palace", "Virgil's Tomb", "The Grotto of Posillipo", "Grotto del Cane at the Lake of Agnano near Naples", "Hotel delle Crocelle", "The Town of Pozzuoli near Naples", "The Royal Gardens", "View of Naples from Mount Vesuvius") and the ruins of Pompeii ("Sepulchre of Romulus", "Street of the Tombs", "Temple of Isis", "The Gate of Pompei", "Temple of Mercury"). Provenance: Henriette Campbell; General Baron de Jamblinne de Meux (armorial bookplate). 2. VIEWS OF NAPLES. [Naples, ca. 1825]. In-8 square; 56 drawings (on 28 leaves), in pen and ink, heightened with watercolours and gouaches and framed with black fillet (7 x 10 cm), captioned at the bottom in pen, protected by a serpente. Nice condition, very fresh colours. Dull contemporary pink paper boards, gilt fillet around the boards (spine rebacked, endpapers renewed, small black spots on the boards, headpieces damaged, corners dull). Picturesque collection of animated views of characters, made by a local artist (who remained anonymous) to be sold as souvenirs to tourists. The finely drawn and coloured miniatures, captioned in Italian, represent the bay of Naples, the port, the main monuments, the ruins of Pompeii and Vesuvius, the last eight views being devoted to the most recent eruptions of the time (those of 1794, 1807, 1813, 1819, 1822), with striking night scenes, highly coloured in spite of the format of the work. Provenance: General baron de Jamblinne de Meux (armorial bookplate).
