Harry KESSLER - Autograph letter signed to Professor Wilmotte in Brussels.
Weimar, February 25, 1909.
Bifeuillet, 17 x 12 cm, 1 ½ p.
He asks to postpone a lecture because he has to go to the south of France "for some studies in the museums of Marseille, Montpellier, etc."
Count Harry Kessler (1868-1937), director of the Grand Ducal Museum of Art and Applied Arts in Weimar, a great patron of the arts and art collector, was closely linked to the avant-gardes of his time. In 1908, he had Henry Van de Velde appointed head of the Kunstgewerbeschule, the home of the future Bauhaus. He invited many prestigious speakers to Weimar, such as André Gide, Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann and Rainer Maria Rilke. His correspondent was Maurice Wilmotte (1861-1942), a Belgian philologist of international renown, who studied in Germany, became a professor at the University of Liège in 1895 and founded the Revue wallonne. After the war, he was one of the very first members of the Académie de Langue et de Littérature françaises.
