BATTLE OF WATERLOO] Henry William Paget, 2nd Earl of Uxbridge, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, known as LORD UXBRIDGE - Autograph letter signed to Jan Willem Pienemann.
Uxbridge House, 8 June 1823.
Bifeuillet, 18 x 11 cm, 4 pp. signed "Anglesey".
Lord Uxbridge (1768-1854) commanded the Duke of Wellington's cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815), where he led the famous heavy cavalry charge against the French 1st Infantry Corps. At the end of the battle, he was wounded in the right leg, which had to be amputated.
In his letter, he gives the Dutch painter Pienemann (1779-1853) details of the uniform requested to paint his portrait. "I have this moment received a letter from the Earl of Clancarty which reminds me that I have been very remiss in not answering the two letters [...] relative to my uniform dress which you want for the purpose of proceeding with your picture of the Battle of Waterloo [...]. In postscript, he announces that he will not be able to send the equipment of his horse until later.
Pienemann made an equestrian portrait "Lord Uxbridge at Waterloo" (undated), but the picture we are talking about here is more than likely the one entitled "The Battle of Waterloo" (1824), a monumental canvas showing the Duke of Wellington greeting the Prince of Orange, future king of the Netherlands under the name of William II, lying wounded on a stretcher. Lord Uxbridge, on horseback, is shown prominently to the left of the Duke. This painting, in the Rijksmuseum, was intended for Wellington, but when King William I saw it, he bought it for his son.
