[CHINA] [BEIJING - HANKOU RAILWAY ]- JEAN... - Lot 272 - Morel de Westgaver
[CHINA] [BEIJING - HANKOU RAILWAY ]- JEAN JADOT surrounded by his colleagues in the foreground of a railway car. Photograph. 270 x 340 mm. Unsigned albumen print. Slightly damaged lower right corner. "Artisan of the Belgian expansion in China", Jean Jadot (On-lez-Jemelle, 1862 - Brussels, 1932), engineer, began his brilliant career in Egypt, within the Empain group, to carry out the construction of the tramway in Cairo; in 1896, he has the mission to direct the construction of the railway in Lower Egypt. In 1898, the Société d'Étude de Chemins de Fer en Chine, a Franco-Belgian group actively supported by Leopold II, obtains the concession of a railway of more than 1,200 km linking Peking to Hankow. The group called on Jean Jadot to carry out the construction of this line. A skilful financier and negotiator, he succeeded in extending the network entrusted to his company and in creating other companies. In 1906, back in Brussels, he became a member of the board of directors of the Société Générale de Belgique, which he headed a few years later. Ref: Ginette Kurgan-Van Hentenryk, "Jean Jadot, artisan de l'expansion belge en Chine", Aca. royale des Sciences d'Outre-Mer, N.S., XXXIX-3, 1965. RARE ICONOGRAPHIC DOCUMENT.
