Ernst Boerschmann (Priekulé, Lithuania, 1873 - Bad Pyrmont, Germany, 1949), architect, engineer, undertook several missions to China as scientific adviser to the German legation. He was the first Westerner to systematically document Chinese religious architecture. His two books, "Chinesische Architektur" and "Baukunst und Landschaft in China. Eine Reise durch zwölf Provinzen" brought him international acclaim. His field observations have set the standard for architectural historians in the region to this day.
