[CHINA] Paul HOUO-MING-TSE - How to disguise... - Lot 281 - Morel de Westgaver
[CHINA] Paul HOUO-MING-TSE - How to disguise fakes? Studies on some Chinese antiquities by the owner of the Ta Kou Tchai (Cabinet where one penetrates antiquity). Translation by X.. Peking, Imprimerie des Lazaristes du Pei-Tang, 1919. 2 volumes bound in Chinese style in 1 in-8 volume, midnight blue chagrin, five-ribbed spine, first 2 covers preserved. [2], [1], [1 bl.], xxiii, 126 pp.; [1 (pl. in Chinese)], 156 pp. Text in Chinese opposite the text in French. 38 hors-texte (some recto verso) in black depicting various objects and 5 plates printed in blue and white. Rare work from the Lazarist presses which was intended for foreigners living in Peking and which, at the time, does not seem to have circulated outside Chinese borders. The author (1880?-1949?), a convert to Catholicism, was educated in a French institution in China. According to Susan Nanquin, Houo, through his writings and the objects he supplied to foreign clients, became one of the major protagonists in the debate that then began on Chinese art. Cf. Susan Naquin, Chinese Studies, XXXIV-2, 2015.
