[CHINA] Index and illustrated guide book... - Lot 285 - Morel de Westgaver
[CHINA] Index and illustrated guide book to the new official plan of Peking. Shanghai, Geographical & Topographical Society of China, [1917]. 230 x 290 mm, bound in later brown cloth, first board preserved and rebacked, endpapers renewed. The copy offered here is described as follows: [6 (advertisements) of 8 (lacks Preface/Table of contents], 87, 4, 20, [2 (Additions on the plan of Peking)], [1 (Gates of the Peking City)], [1 bl.], 9, [1 bl.], 36 pp. - The first 87 pp. are illustrated with 5 out-of-text plans, 2 of which are foldouts: 1. "The outlines of Peking City since Chow to the Liao dynasty." 2. "The City of Peking under the Yuan dynasty." 3. "The outlines of Peking City during the Chin dynasty." 4. Large fold-out map "The immediate environs of Peking in which temples and pagodas are incorporated." 5. Large fold-out map "Peking and its environs. The territory under the jurisdiction of the central Peking government." (2 restorations with transparent tape). Next in the order mentioned in the collation are: - Index to the map of Peking and its environs. - Index to the new official plan of Peking, with a small insert printed on brown paper "Explanation to the key." (Transfer). - Index to the new map of Chihli Province. - Peking commercial directory. As we have not been able to locate any specific collation, we cannot guarantee whether the copy should contain other maps. The work is referenced in the Shanghai library, which does not give any details on the number of maps; the pagination it mentions is lower than ours (it only mentions 87 pp.). Moreover, it is mentioned that the title of the first plate serves as the title of the work, which does not have its own title page. The work is cited, but without any collation, by Susan Naquin in "Peking: Temples and City life, 1400-1990" (p. 737), University of California Press, 2000.
