Ownership statement "Julien van Stappen, Canton" added later in ballpoint pen on f. 3. ENRICHED with a l.a.s. from Julien van Stappen, Jesuit, dated 10 December 1877. 6 pages in-12. Interesting letter addressed to his parents in which, at the request of the baron ???, he brings clarifications about the opium trade and the ravages caused by its consumption. "The most esteemed qualities are those coming from India and known under the names of Patna opium, Benares opium and Malwa opium! ... in addition to opium from India, a small quantity of Persian opium is also imported into China..."
