[CHINA] OKADA GYOKUZAN - Morokoshi meisho zue 唐土名勝図会 [Illustrations of Famous Places in China]. Kawachiya Kichibē, Ōsaka, Bunka 2 [1806]. 6 volumes, 27 cm, sewn in Japanese style, in yellow embossed covers, title and table label on each volume (some spotting or soiling, some characters faded or partially erased). This Japanese-designed work, initiated by Kenkado Kimura and illustrated by the artists Okada Gyokuzan (17137-1812), Oka Yugaku (1762+1833) and Ohara Toya (1771-1840), is part of the tradition of the Japanese "meisho zue", popular tourist guides illustrated during the 18th and 19th centuries. This guide, dedicated to China under the Qing dynasty, focuses on Beijing. The text of each volume is abundantly accompanied by woodcuts: plans of the Forbidden City, maps, temples, scientific instruments (armillary spheres, the observatory built by the Belgian Jesuit Verbiest) or music instruments, costumes, gardens... There are more than 200 woodcuts. RARE.
