Clément KONS / CHARMAGUEY - Album "Martine". Watercolor and gouache fabric projects. Small square in-4, 265 x 260 mm. Bound in Art Deco green half-chagrin (spine missing), asymmetrical vellum boards, the upper board decorated with the name "Martine" in large black stenciled characters, arranged diagonally from top to bottom and crossed in the center by a horizontal black line, the lower board (wider leather, narrower vellum) crossed by a horizontal black line, gilt edges. The album counts: - 20 flying projects. - 19 projects glued partially or fully in the album. Very nice projects of "Art Deco" furnishing fabrics, of various sizes, circular in shape. Geometric shapes (circles intertwining in lozenges, lozenges combining with lines, circles and stripes ...), floral patterns; all in shades of blue, pink, purple, parma ... One or the other bears the name of "Charmaguey" or the initials of "C. K.". Let us note also that 2 projects carry on the back the stamp of "Helen Mai, artist-painter, bd Raspail". Helen Mai is the pseudonym of the painter, ceramist and sculptor, Jeanne Lartigue (1903-1995). Although the projects are from other workshops, the binding of the album is reminiscent of the Atelier "Martine" that Poiret founded in 1911 and which he named after his youngest daughter, Martine. Numbers 175 to 182 offer a beautiful collection of gouaches and watercolors from these Parisian workshops. These works cover the Art Deco period until the 1950s. They combine a great finesse of execution both in the choice of motifs and in the choice of colors. This collection contains projects for wallpaper and furnishing and decorative fabrics and a project for scarves (No. 175). Clément KONS (Mulhouse, 1879 - Paris, 1956), naturalized in 1928, established himself in Paris at that time as a "draftsman for printing on fabrics" at 17, rue Saint Fiacre in the 2nd arrondissement. He is listed in the Industrial Directory, under the activity of "Drawings of all kinds for printing on fabrics, silk and cotton. In 1931, his company was transferred to 70 rue de l'Aqueduc in the 10th arrondissement, and the Annuaire Général de l'Industrie et du Commerce mentioned his activity as "Designer for prints on fabrics". Charmaguey, of whom we could not find the trace, probably collaborated with Kons or succeeded him as testifies a project which carries their seal or joint mark.
