Edouard MANET - Lot 203
Edouard MANET [ÉDOUARD MANET] Antonin PROUST - National School of Fine Arts. Exhibition of the works of Édouard Manet. Preface by Émile Zola. Catalog. Paris, A. Quantin, January 1884. In-12, 190 x 120 mm. Bradel brown half-percaline with corners, gilt spine, burgundy title page, witnesses preserved. Some foxing. 72 pp. Catalog of an exhibition organized one year after Manet's death, preceded by an important preface by Zola and followed by a "Speech delivered on Manet's grave". Copy with numerous notes attributed to J.-K. Huysmans (according to a handwritten note signed by the bookseller L. Souillié on the title page), although probably from another hand, giving comments and appreciations often acerbic: "detestable - of the fireman" (Music in the Tuileries), "mediocre" (A monk in prayer), "idiot, childish" (Portrait of Mr. Théodore Duret"), "pretentious, stupid" (The rest), a lot of "false Goya", etc.; sometimes laudatory: "very beautiful [...] it lives. Superb, the best of all, certainly" (Olympia), "good" (The servant of bocks), "charming" (Young girl in undress), etc. Long concluding note in fine: "It's rather strange, it's clear painting... and smutty, all at the same time. The latest Manet paintings remain mediocre [...]". Provenances: L. Souillé, bookseller in Paris (stamp); Willy Du Bois, son of the sculptor Paul Du Bois and Alice Sèthe, brother-in-law of Henry van de Velde (monogrammed stamp WDB).
