[BATTLE OF WATERLOO] Ch. R. GAUMARE - Autograph letter signed to "Monsieur P.C. Labouchere a Londres". Brussels, June 20, 1815. Bifeuillet in-4 (23,5 x 19 cm), 2 pp. on laid paper in French, suscription. Slightly browned, a few small spots and light wetness, small tears without loss. Interesting letter informing the banker Labouchère of the outcome of the battle of Waterloo: "the victory was finally decided in favor of the Allies on the 18th at 11 o'clock in the evening, the French army is in full rout". The signatory is worried about being without news of his own informant, the "young Boode", engaged on the front. "This victory will unfortunately make shed many tears", "the Belgians on whom one did not count much behaved with the greatest intrepidity". He reports the death of the Duke of Brunswick and the wound ("fortunately not dangerous") of the Crown Prince of the Netherlands. He hopes that the defeat of the French will contribute "to the end of so many misfortunes", "the business was already very languid and has been absolutely null for a few days", "It is said that the Battle will bear the name of the Beautiful Alliance which is that of a farm where the Duke of Wellington and General Blücher made their junction". Pierre César Labouchère (1772-1839), a Dutch banker of French origin, ran the Hope & Co. in Amsterdam. A high-flying financier and diplomat, he was in contact with both Talleyrand and the Duke of Wellington and intervened on several occasions in important economic and financial negotiations during the First Empire. Towards the end of his career, he settled permanently in England. Cf. TULARD, Dictionnaire Napoléon, Paris, 1987, p. 1011. Original letter having documented the work of Théo FLEISCHMAN, Winand Aerts, Bruxelles pendant la bataille de Waterloo, Brussels, 1956 (cf. p. 168).
