SOCIÉTÉ COOPÉRATIVE "LES MAGASINS GÉNÉRAUX" - Set of 9 panels of photos of the headquarters of Boussu-lez-Walcourt, Dinant, Nismes, Philippeville and Thuin. Ca 1920. Dimensions of the panels : 1045 x 722 mm. Photographs (+/- 170 x 225 or 120 x 165 mm, 3 of large size: +/- 450 x 315) pasted in full on red cardboard panels, some decorated with the torch logo, titles in green gouache, captions in white paint. Some wetnesses especially marginal, tears without loss to 2 panels (one on 10 cm, one on 30 cm with damage to a photo). Remarkable set showing the locations and facilities of this socialist cooperative society founded in Philippeville in 1918. "Serving more than 300 communes of the Namurois and Luxembourg in 1923, they counted some 10,000 members and 50 offices" (H. Legros, p. 77). Six panels are devoted more particularly to the buildings, the personnel and the equipment: bakery and main building, yard, rolling stock, horses ("cavalry"), personnel, etc. The photos of the "Central Store" in Philippeville (2 panels) also show the management, accounting and shipping offices, the carpentry, repair and clothing workshops, and the various warehouses. The other three panels are devoted to views of the surroundings of each locality (landscapes, remarkable places, tourist sites), arranged around a large central photo representing the local Maison du peuple. The façade of the one in Dinant is decorated with a banner announcing "International Exhibition of Cooperation - Ghent, June 15 - September 15 [1924]". Bibliography: Legros, H., "Les structures de la coopération socialiste", in Revue belge d'histoire contemporaine, XXII, 1991, 1-2, pp. 73-127. Interesting photographic evidence of these cooperatives founded by the socialist party. SET OF 9 PANELS, VARIOUS CONDITIONS.
