[TEXTILE] Helen MAI PSEUDONYM OF JEANNE LARTIGUE (PARIS, AUGUST 12, 1903 - PARIS, JANUARY 1995) - Set of 20 original projects painted with gouache and ink, geometric, figurative and abstract textile models, for fashion or furniture textiles. In sheets, mounted on white canson. Dimensions of the supports: 500 x 320 mm. Stamp of the artist in the recto or in the verso, annotations in the pencil in the lower margin. Handwritten notation in black ink in the lower right corner. 2 projects are on bright green crepe paper. The designs are in black and white, geometric style, drawn in ink and chalk, one of the two is enhanced with pink and blue graphic elements in gouache. Both are in the connection. 1 project is on special paper, like midnight blue tissue paper. The light motif on a dark background is a floral composition and evokes in its graphic treatment and finesse, a lace network. The tones range from bright pink to white, passing through copper and mauve. The pattern is intended for women's clothing, rather evening or cocktail. 17 various projects, one of which is specifically made for a child's bedroom and features a black and white composition of railroad tracks and small trains crisscrossing the countryside, structured with flat tones of bright green and light brown and completed with small figurative elements such as a dog, bird, tree, rooster, sheep, etc. 7 projects are titled, "OAK" is a dominant pastel pattern on a bright green background, painted with gouache in 5 colors and representing a tangle of veined tree branches with stylized wood rings. A frieze on the right side shows the artist's name repeated. "BALCONS" is a fine white line pattern on a black background, organized in a large regular grid and featuring flowers, potted plants and cacti, the whole embellished with many small geometric patterns. "SOLFÈGE" is an abstract black pattern done in ink on blotting paper, which gives a spindle effect and an irregular line. The design is nicely animated and evokes very stylized notes. "LES FILETS" is an abstract motif in black ink on a white background with a touch of mauve and vivid green, showing an assembly of nets with varying density of loops. "ARLECHINO" is a figurative motif in gouache representing three masked Harlequin characters entangled in a network of black and white diamonds and checkerboard in shades of gray, the whole is enhanced by small touches of bright green. It is signed and completed with a frieze on the right side with the artist's name repeated. "CERAMIC" is a motif that evokes the tiles by its structure in grid and its geometric ornaments, it is completed with flat tints in gouache. "WEAVING" is a geometric pattern in chalk and gouache evoking a weaving, the bright pink and white lines structure the whole. BEAUTIFUL AND VARIED SET OF 20 PLATES. Helen MAI pseudonym of Jeanne LARTIGUE (Paris, August 12, 1903 - Paris, January 1995). Numbers 261 to 275 present a very nice selection of original gouaches for projects intended for furniture or clothing textiles as well as handbag projects. The vast majority of these models are signed by her or stamped with her Parisian address on Boulevard Raspail. Abstract and cubist painter, designer, ceramist, mosaicist, sculptor, etc.. Helen Mai, a multi-talented artist, relative of the famous photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue, has created numerous ceramic pieces, mosaics and enamels, models for the decorative arts and fashion (designs for African inspired fabrics). Many of her works have been acquired by Jean Lelong. She has exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, La Grande Chaumière and the Lucy Krogh Gallery. In the field of decoration, she is best known for having practiced encaust painting, thus rediscovering the secrets of the ancient frescoes of Pompeii or Fayoum. This technique with burnt colors, used by the great masters of Greek and Roman painting and then Byzantine. Helen Mai has rediscovered this painting, using a hot iron instead of a brush to apply a colored wax to fix it on the support, by burning it. We find different techniques mixed in the projects presented here (bags, then fabrics and papers). The same richness of inspiration in all these motifs which are nourished by nature, and also by various cultures and periods.
