[TEXTILE] Helen MAI PSEUDONYM OF JEANNE LARTIGUE (PARIS, AUGUST 12, 1903 - PARIS, JANUARY 1995) - Set of 11 large original projects painted in gouache and ink, various textile models: geometric, floral, figurative and abstract, for fashion textile or furnishing In sheets. 7 projects executed on canson, 4 mounted. Various dimensions of the supports: 500 x 325 mm for the 4 mounted projects. - Geometrical pattern on pink background, in 6 colors : Pattern made of nice friezes on a light pink background. In the background are 8 friezes of black graphic elements, whose bases are square or rectangular and not solid, they are interspersed with fine lines of gray color, continuous and discontinuous and of various thicknesses. In the foreground, geometric elements of light blue, white, bright yellow and red, also organized in frieze but in a more random way, complete the whole. The blue and white elements are distributed in a homogeneous way and the red and yellow elements in a more punctual way. The general line is quite generous and spontaneous. This textile model is in the connection and is signed by the artist. - Large abstract pattern "coats of arms", in 7 colors. This pattern is made up of many superimposed elements, in the form of coats of arms, shields, drops and hearts, whose points are oriented downwards. The elements are structured by an assembly of patterns, geometric elements and colored flat tints. The interior motifs of these forms are mainly made up of stripes of variable thickness, curved or straight and of pink, grey and black color as well as black and pink polka dots, grid and ribbon. There are also heterogeneous elements such as triangles, rhombuses, crosses, stars, arrows, a heart and irregular geometric forms or tracings of pink, burgundy, black and gray, and more punctually bright green. The small areas of flat areas are numerous and are colored burgundy, pink, light gray and dark gray, black and more occasionally bright green and bright blue. The off-white background is covered with a regular pattern of small gray and black crosses. At the bottom right of the drawing are represented hands. This textile model is in the connection. - Large abstract pattern, in 6 colors. Abstract pattern composed of large lines of blue, light and dark green, purple and red. The lines are articulated in right and acute angles and fill the whole page in a very homogeneous way. The brushstrokes are particularly visible on the green tones. It can also be noted that small areas, in dark purple and khaki, have not been covered and are still visible. The background is black and white with a hatched and scraped texture that gives an irregular shaded effect. This textile model is signed by the artist. Let us point out, a large plant pattern in 6 colors, with lizards; a multicolored cashmere pattern on a red background; a starfish pattern in 9 colors. Finally, a large pattern of water lilies in 8 colors. Lateral tear. Tear on 1 other project. TOGETHER 11 SUPERB PROJECTS, SOME OF WHICH COULD BE FRAMED. Helen MAI pseudonym of Jeanne LARTIGUE (Paris, August 12, 1903 - Paris, January 1995). Numbers 261 to 275 present a very nice selection of original gouaches for projects intended for furniture or clothing textiles as well as handbag projects. The vast majority of these models are signed by her or stamped with her Parisian address on Boulevard Raspail. Abstract and cubist painter, designer, ceramist, mosaicist, sculptor, etc.. Helen Mai, a multi-talented artist, relative of the famous photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue, has created numerous ceramic pieces, mosaics and enamels, models for the decorative arts and fashion (designs for African inspired fabrics). Many of her works have been acquired by Jean Lelong. She has exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, La Grande Chaumière and the Lucy Krogh Gallery. In the field of decoration, she is best known for having practiced encaust painting, thus rediscovering the secrets of the ancient frescoes of Pompeii or Fayoum. This technique with burnt colors, used by the great masters of Greek and Roman painting and then Byzantine. Helen Mai has rediscovered this painting, using a hot iron instead of a brush to apply a colored wax to fix it on the support, by burning it. We find different techniques mixed in the projects presented here (bags, then fabrics and papers). The same richness of inspiration in all these motifs which are nourished by nature, and also by various cultures and periods.
