Small in-4, 250 x 185 mm, paperback, illustrated cover in black, title in red and black (small tear at top of first cover). 190, [2 bl.], [6] pp. Text in a red frame. Edition illustrated with 65 vignettes and lettering as well as 12 hors-texte in black. First edition of the 77 illustrations by Magritte, including the one on the cover and 12 hors-texte. Edition at 4100 copies + qqs h.c., all on pur chiffon (n° 998). In reality, it seems that the edition was limited to a few hundred copies. The book had been announced as early as June 1945 and the original drawings appeared under number 89 at the great exhibition of surrealism organized by Magritte in the gallery of the same editions in Dec. and Jan. 1945-1946. According to Schwilden and Mariën, this is a fictitious edition; the print run was limited to a few hundred copies.
