[MANUSCRIT - LIÈGE] "L'industrie & le commerce liégeois à Monsieur Frère-Orban, ministre des Finances. March 15, 1860" [Title on the front cover]. S.l., [1860]. folio; [21] ff. in French, pen and brown ink, last f. a certificate of conformity of the ms. copy with autogr. signatures of the members of the delegated committee. Black bradel chagrin, boards framed with a double gilt fillet, gilt title on the upper board, gilt roulette on the fillings, ivory moiré paper lining and endpapers, gilt edges (period binding). (Small very marginal rubs, linings and endpapers soiled on the sides, binding split after the 1st book). In black percaline case. Handwritten copy of an open letter to Walthère Frère-Orban (1812-1896), a liberal minister of Liège origin, signed by industrialists and merchants from Liège, to "express their deep gratitude for the noble and courageous resolution" taken by the minister "to deliver trade from the odious hindrances that the institution of the communal grants brings to its freedom". He had indeed abolished this tax which struck the goods at the entry of the big cities. The text (3 pp.) is followed by the list of the more than 550 signatories, on 2 col. and the autogr. signatures of the delegates, among whom : D.D. Dothée, A. Dawans, Clément Francotte, Aug. Lassence, etc. Enriched with 2 l.a.s. to W. Frère-Orban, minister of Finance (2 bifeuillets in-f°, 1 p.): 1. Geoffroy, A., president of the deputation. Liege, April 3, 1860. Envel. marked "confidential" with red wax seal cons. 2. Deputation of the industry & trade of Liège (the same and 7 members). Liege, March 29, 1860. Official letter asking the minister to receive them to present "an address in the name of the industry & the trade of Liège", with in margin an inscription initialed (by Frère-Orban?): "Tuesday next - The morning / Informed this 30 March 1860".
