[FRANCE CARICATURES] [A. BELLOGUET ]- Map of France instructive & amusing divided into eighty-six departments. Paris, Julien, Lithography of G. Paulon, [1856]. Lithograph in colors, 53,5 x 67,5 cm, pasted in full on green cardboard. Without the lithographed title which is often missing. Cracks at the folds, soiling especially at the margins. Very fresh colors. Rare puzzle card representing the France of the Second Empire with its 86 departments in the form of grotesque faces with regional hairstyles. This educational game can be dated between 1852 and 1860 because on the one hand, the city of La Roche-sur-Yon was renamed Napoleon-Vendée in 1852, and on the other hand Nice and Savoy were not yet attached to France, which happened in 1860. The number of departments, initially 83, rose to 130 in 1810 following the annexations made by the Republic and the Empire, then fell back to 86 after the fall of the emperor in 1815. The annexation in 1860 of Nice and Savoy (divided into 2 departments: Savoy and Haute-Savoie) brought the total to 89. Bibliography: BnF (digitized in Gallica).
