[ANTWERP] [Max ELSKAMP ]- Folklore Museum / Geöffnet von 10 bis 4 Uhr / Open from 10 to 4 o'clock / Ouvert de 10 à 4 heures. [Antwerp], Drukk. J.-E. Buschmann, s.d. [ca 1907]. Poster 325 x 235 mm, fixed on cardboard, perforated at the top, a cord inserted to hang it. Some faint rings of wetness in the lower margin. Charming poster decorated with Max Elskamp's woodcuts drawn in black (text printed in red), representing a crasset in a frame of stylized foliage and flowers, the whole being framed by a series of hearts spaced with double lines. This decoration is similar to that of an exhibition poster (cf. de Sadeleer, 26-27) of the Conservatory of Flemish Folk Tradition founded in 1900 by Elskamp, Ed. de Bruijn and Laurent Fierens, and which is at the origin of the Museum of Folklore founded in 1907 under the auspices of the City of Antwerp. The crasset (oil lamp) was their emblem. ATTACHED: - A pair of keys, one of which "opens from the windows of the M[usée] du Folklore," according to a ms. label in an early hand. [Provenance: Henri Grell] - Orbicular seal with the monogram "HG" surrounded by the inscription "HENRI GRELL / ANTWERP". Bronze, D. 20 mm, H 27 mm. Henri (Hendrik) Grell (1877-1946), Antwerp folklorist, was a member of the administrative commission of the Antwerp Folklore Museum. Bibliography: Émile H. Van Heurck, L'œuvre des folkloristes anversois, Antwerp, J.-E. Buschmann, 1914, p. 17 and passim.
