TING-TUEN-LING, LETTER FROM THE PROVINCE OF CHANG-SI - The little slipper (Thou-sio-sié). Translation by Charles Aubert. With 6 original etchings reproduced by Frédéric Chevalier. Paris, Librairie de l'Eau-Forte, (1875). Large in-8, 270 x 175 mm, sewn in Chinese style, in yellow silk printed cover (slightly dusty and creased). [26] ff. and 6 etchings out of text recto verso. This Chinese writer, political refugee in France following the Taiping revolt, was taken under the wing of Théophile Gautier to whom he pays tribute in his preface. Ting-Tuen-Ling was the teacher of Judith, the daughter of Théophile Gautier. After Gautier's death, he married Caroline Julie Liégeois who accused him of polygamy. It was during his stay in prison that he wrote this little novel. Pale freckles on the boards, small tears at the folds, fold of the last f. entirely split.
