Small in-4, 195 x 150 mm, contemporary muted parchment. 3-127, [1] pp. (Missing f. A1, title). Second edition, the first appeared in 1615, illustrated with 60 etched emblems, Latin quotations and poetry in Spanish, Dutch and French opposite. Freckles, traces of handling, ring of wetness in the margin of the last 4 leaves. Landwehr, LC, 838. T' Antwerpen, inde Plantiinsche Druckeriie, 1640. in-4, 225 x 170 mm, half basane, smooth spine (later binding rubbed in poor condition, headpieces torn off with lacks, corners dull, upper margin trimmed short). [8 (including engraved title)], 712, [7, 1 bl.] pp. (Missing pp. 112-113 & 273-280). Title engraved by M. Natalis after A. Diepenbeke. Illustrated with 98 (of 103) emblems by C. Galle. Dutch version and adaptation of the famous centenary commemorative volume of the "Imago primi saeculi", with special attention to the role of the Jesuits in the Netherlands. The Latin work was largely conceived by Joannes Bollandus (1596-1665). The Dutch text is by L. Uwens; the verses, for the most part, by A. Poirters.
