Claude SIMPSON - Lot 37
Claude SIMPSON Jacques d' ADELSWÄRD-FERSEN - Black masses. Lord Lyllian. Paris, Librairie Léon Vanier, A. Messein succr, 1905. In-8, paperback, cover illustrated in green and black tones by Claude Simpson, untrimmed, witnesses preserved (spine slightly and partially detached from front cover, tear at bottom of first 2 white endpapers over 65 mm, a few small scattered tears to browned witnesses). First edition of this sulphurous novel, printed in 7 numbered copies on hollande (n° 1 ?). In 1903, the media scandal dubbed the "Black Mass Affair" broke out in France. The young author Jacques d'Adelswärd-Fersen invited young people to recite poems and stage "tableaux vivants" in which they often posed in the simplest of outfits. The writer was convicted and, after a brief prison sentence, exiled to Capri. This "affair" is recounted in this roman à clefs. Jean d'Alsace is none other than Jean Lorrain, and Herserange is the name of the family estate of the author's parents. There are also references to other homosexuals of the time: Friedrich A. Krupp, Achille Essebac and Robert de Montesquiou. COPY WITH 2 L.A.S. FROM THE AUTHOR TO THE PUBLISHER ALBERT MESSEIN. 2 ff. in-8 & 1 f. in-8, both addressed from L'hôtel Quisiana in Capri, where Fersen had retired following his conviction in France. "Monsieur Messein, Monsieur Messein next time I'll make you a present of five sous and an envelope. Postcards are a neurasthenia for me..." Fersen asks the publisher to send him the proofs as soon as possible before his departure for Egypt. Commenting on the book's presentation, Fersen wrote: "Don't you imagine that Sodom is not and never will be for bun merchants? Please don't turn it into a grocer's book...". In one of April 16, 06 (?), he asks Messein "who become my friend" to send him to Capri all things about the book or in my name, and to send a copy of the book to Miss Rebecca Baker in Florence. Some rare spotting and minor soiling. Provenance: H. Lefèvre bookshop label. Lefèvre (Paris). SZCZUR, P. Construction du narrataire et hétéronormativité: sur l'exemple du roman de Jacques d'Adelswärd'Fersen "Lord Lyllian. Messes noires" (1905).
