Louis de ROBERT / MARCEL PROUST - Réussir. S.l., [c. 1920]. In-8, 154 [i.e. 148] ff. mounted on tabs, pen and blue ink on graph paper, qqs proofs pasted in full, numerous corrections in ink and black or red pencil, text on recto with occasional annotations on verso. Midnight-blue Maroquin du Cap, double gilt fillet around boards, smooth spine decorated with gilt filleted frame and gilt rose branch along with three roses mosaicked in red leather, cold-stamped floral motif mosaicked in red leather, burgundy morocco title-piece, gilt filleted edges and headpieces, marbled paper endpapers in shades of blue, gray and gold, double endpapers in shades of blue, mauve, water green and gold. Spine very slightly faded, minor rubbing to headpieces, spines and corners. A fine copy. Very legible autograph manuscript of this novel published in 1920 by Flammarion. The text is sometimes heavily reworked: numerous strikethroughs, passages crossed out or replaced by a laminated sheet (some of which are fold-outs), etc. Many passages are taken from a periodical publication and reprinted in extenso, with handwritten corrections and modifications (changes of names, details, additions, etc.), and some passages in another hand with corrections in the first hand. The manuscript appears to be complete. Note: ff. 18 and 19 on 1 f., as well as ff. 100 and 101, ff. 61 to 64 deleted by the author (note on f. 65). ENRICHED WITH AN AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER SIGNED BY MARCEL PROUST, s.l.n.d., bifeuillet in-12, 4 pp. (typescript in 2 ex. enclosed): "Cher Louis, Je vous suis mille fois reconnaissant de m'avoir envoyé ce beau livre où les caractères s'opposent les uns aux autres, et ont en eux-mêmes leurs oppositions, si logiquement, si fortement. It seems to me that my art [...] is similar to yours [...]". Enriched with a flyleaf: extract from "L'aventure d'Horace Gerfaut [et autres récits]" by L. de Robert (5 ff. impr. sous couv. avec titre manuscrit). L. de Robert (1871-1937), a novelist who won the Prix Femina in 1911, was a close friend of Proust, who entrusted him with the proofreading of his "Du côté de chez Swann". In "Comment débuta Marcel Proust" (How Marcel Proust began), he published the correspondence relating to his search for a publisher.
