J.-L. PERRICHON - Lot 385
J.-L. PERRICHON Charles BAUDELAIRE - Les Fleurs du mal. Edition decorated with portraits, headpieces, culs-de-lampe and fleurons drawn and engraved by J.-L. PERRICHON. Paris, Édouard Pelletan, R. Helleu (sur les presses de l'Imprimerie nationale), 1917. In-8, polished lavallière morocco signed by Ch. de Samblanx, large "cathedral" decoration cold-stamped on the boards and set in a cold-engraved frame and gilded fillets, smooth spine adorned throughout with small cold-engraved irons and gilded fillets (slight rubbing to the upper headpiece), gilded borders, headpieces and spines, gilded edges with witnesses, ornamented cover and spine preserved, in a slipcase. Beautiful edition printed in red and black to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Baudelaire's death, with Gide's preface in the original edition. The woodcut illustrations include 3 portraits, 1 of which is the frontispiece (the poet's famous self-portrait in 1860). Edition of 790 numbered copies, 40 of which are present. One of 30 on chine, 2nd paper (no. 46 initialled by Pelletan). Publisher's prospectus bound in fine. No fewer than 10 deluxe editions, illustrated or not, appeared in 1917; ours contains the 6 condemned plays, the "Nouvelles fleurs du mal" and a few poems from the definitive 1868 edition? Attractive binding with romantic "cathedral" decoration. Talvart & Place, I, 285.
