AGNIA DINESS [CHINA] Agnia DINESS, ET AL. - Album of 55 photographs, 10 postcards and about 100 miscellaneous documents in Russian, except for a few in French, about an official trip made by Russian Admiral N. Skrydlov to the Far East. Russia, 1902. In-4° oblong, photos and documents pasted in full on white card, handwritten captions in Russian. Lacquered wood boards decorated with paintings and three brass motifs inlaid on the upper board (period binding). Rubbed, spine missing, 2 boards detached, accidents to corners and edges. Interior well preserved. Exceptional set including : - 55 photographs, most of them albumen prints, including 20 large-format ones (21 x 27 cm) mostly signed by Agnia Diness, the first female photographer in the Far East: views of Peking, the Forbidden City, pagodas, villages, bridges, forts, statues, etc. The other photos, in smaller format, show Russian travelers, their families, crews and officers, etc. +/- 70 documents: illustrated menus (most in French, some handwritten with color drawings), invitations, programs, 1 telegram, 1 typed letter, etc. +/- 30 press clippings in Russian (1 in French) reporting on the trip, some illustrated portraits, 1 double portrait of Skrydlov and General Nikolai Grodekov, Governor of the Amur region (chromolithograph cut out from a magazine), etc. Skrydlov (1844-1918), who distinguished himself in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, had a brilliant career in the Russian Imperial Fleet.
