Arnold BENNETT - The Art of Living. Translation by Clara & Arthur Hirsch. [Ornamentation by Théo VAN RYSSELBERGHE]. Paris, Jean Budry, 1926. Small in-4: 327, [2], [1 bl.], [1], [1 bl.] pp. Paperback, partly uncut. Spine faded. First edition of the French translation of this essay, illustrated with lettering and culs-de-lampe by Théo Van Rysselberghe. Edition of 354 numbered copies. One of 300 on Arches laid paper (no. 240). Enriched with a signed autograph letter from Arthur Hirsch to Mr. and Mrs. Georges Blieck "cordial hommage en témoignage d'estime et en souvenir d'un cours de droit." Accompanied by a visiting card with dispatch, from the same. Arthur Hirsch came from a family of Jewish merchants originally from Germany. A doctor of law from the ULB (1895), he was a trainee with Paul Janson, before registering as a lawyer at the Brussels Court of Appeal (1898). He soon found himself at the head of a major business law firm, specializing in commercial law. On many occasions, Arthur Hirsch represented the interests of his family, who owned a large fashion store in the center of Brussels. A member of the Belgian Workers' Party (POB), Hirsch was not directly involved in political struggles. He did, however, provide financial support for the construction of the Maison du Peuple in Brussels and, until the First World War, was a regular contributor to the socialist daily. Arthur Hirsch also held professorial posts at the Université Nouvelle and then at the ULB. In 1920, he was asked by the Belgian government to visit France to study the workings of the Conseil d'État, with a view to setting up a similar institution in Belgium. AGR notice.
