Oliver GOLDSMITH - She stoops to conquer: or, the mistakes of a night. A comedy. As it is acted at the Theatre-Royal in Covent-Garden. London, printed for F. Newbery, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1773. In-8, [8]-106-[1-1 bl.] pp. Some rare, light spotting or minor foxing. Nineteenth-century marbled calf signed "Bound by Riviere & Son", boards framed in triple gilt fillet with gilt disc on corners, richly decorated gilt ribbed spine, red morocco title and author labels, gilt roulette on edges, gilt int. lace, pebbled paper endpapers, gilt edges. Spines and headpieces slightly rubbed. Fine copy with wide margins. First edition second printing, according to Todd's study, with the mention of the price on the false-title and p. 8 unencumbered with the running title reading "She stoops to conquer:". This famous comedy was first performed on March 15, 1773. The printed version of the play was altered as it went to press, the various states of some leaves having been bound in various combinations (e.g.: p. 63 numbered 36). A very well preserved copy in a fine binding by the workshop of Robert Rivière (1808-1882), an English craftsman of Huguenot origin (DNB, 48, 334-335). Bibliography: William B. Todd, "The first editions of The good natur'd man and She stoops to conquer", in: Studies in Bibliography, 11(1958), 132-142. Provenance: Ex-libris Fernand Spaak.
