Translated from the Spanish by Quévédo; with political historical notes, necessary for the perfect understanding of this Author. Première [-troisième] partie. Printed in La Haie, s.n., 1776. 3 parts bound in 1 volume in-12°, [1-1 bl.], vi, 207 [-1] ; 214 [-2] ; 176 pp. (Paper lightly and evenly browned in places, scattered spotting, small tear p. 29 of part 2). Full marbled calf, smooth spine gilt decorated with flowers, lemon leather label, blue marbled edges (period binding). Presented as a translation of Quevedo's picaresque novel, but almost entirely from the pen of Restif, who added 7 chapters of his own composition to the end of the Spanish novel, notes a.o. on the inquisition and a life of Quevedo. Contains pp. 201-208 of t. I, which are often missing, but without the 4 ff. that should be at the end of t. III (list and "analyses" of the author's works) and are also often absent. Ref. Rives Child, XIII, no. 1. Provenance: Armorial ex-libris stamp faintly legible on title.
