[BOUILLON PRINTS - MEDICINE] Johann Christian Anton THEDEN - - Lot 353
[BOUILLON PRINTS - MEDICINE] Johann Christian Anton THEDEN - Progrès ultérieurs de la chirurgie, ou Remarques & observations nouvelles (...). Translated from the German: by Chayrou (...). Bouillon, de l'imprimerie de la Société typographique, 1777. In-8°: 74-[1-1 bl.]-247 pp. Contemporary blond calf, fillet framing the boards, smooth spine decorated with flowers, title page. (Binding faded, small worm attack along spine ends and tiny one on lower cover). ORIGINAL EDITION of the French translation of "Neue Bemerkungen" by the Prussian surgeon Johann Christian Anton Theden (1714-1797), chief physician to the army of Frederick II. Translated from the German by Chayrou, the text brings together a series of new observations based on the hospital and military experience of the author, an emblematic figure of the surgical revival in 18th-century Prussia. In particular, Theden describes innovative procedures for the treatment of gunshot wounds (including a specific arquebusade preparation), as well as the use of elastic catheters of his own design. The work illustrates Theden's determination to improve the care of the wounded in concrete terms, and to rationalize surgical practices based on an empirical approach. Ref. Clément, p. 191. Douret, 127.
