[ORIENTAL TALES] [Pierre-François Godard de BEAUCHAMPS / Jam - Lot 362
[ORIENTAL TALES] [Pierre-François Godard de BEAUCHAMPS / James RIDLEY / Thomas-Simon GUEULLETTE ]- A collection of three apocryphal, orientalist tales in the vogue for the Arabian Nights, between satire, mystification and libertinism.
Persian manuscript found in the Library of Schah-Hussain, King of Persia, dethroned by Mamouth in 1722. French translation. Constantinople [Lyon], 1729. Small in-12: [4], 108 pp. (title p. slightly defr., the "reversed key" (pp. 105-108) has been bound at the head of the volume). Satire directed against the Regent and his court, according to Lacroix, whose opinion is disputed by Ch. Nodier. In reality, all the names in this novel are anagrams of body parts or sexual practices (e.g. Monilne = monin, Danbre = bander, Mina = hand, Brularues = branleurs, Chedabars = bardaches, Roulée = pox, etc.), and none explicitly refer to characters who actually existed; as for Apprius, he too is an anagram of Priapus. Provenance: Ex-libris with the arms of Malet de Graville. Ref. Gay, II, 552-553. With 13 figures. Tome premier [- troisieme]. Amsterdam, 1782. 3 volumes in-12: 359, 370, 366 pp. 13 figs. (Paper lightly browned in places, spine edged). Contemporary porphyry calf, gilt frieze around covers, ornate smooth spine, title and tailpieces... (1 cap torn off, 1 spine split over 2 cm). A literary mystification, the work was in fact written directly in English by J. Ridley and translated into French by J.-B.-E. Robinet. Illustrated with 13 unsigned figures, including the frontispiece. Ref. Barbier, I, 743. Quérard, II, 1202. Cohen, 894 (1767 ed.). Gay, I, 684. STCN, 305657739.
