Richard CUMBERLAND - A philosophical treatise on natural law - Lot 364
Richard CUMBERLAND - A philosophical treatise on natural laws, in which we investigate and establish, by the nature of things, the form of these laws, their principal leaders, their order, their publication & their obligation: we also refute Thomas Hobbes' elemens de la morale & de la politique... Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier ; Paris, Huart, 1744. In-4° : [4]-xxviii (pagination error)-[2]-435 [i.e. 425]-[9] pp. 1 pl. (Paper slightly browned, a few scuffs). Contemporary calf, spine ribbed, title page. First edition of the French translation by Jean Barbeyrac (the original edition appeared in Latin in 1672). Illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece signed L.F.D.B. [Louis-Fabrice Dubourg] engraved by P. Tanjé, depicting the genius of Cumberland striking down error and the genius of Hobbes. An early handwritten note on the flyleaf states that this is one of the best works ever made in this genre. Ref. Cohen, 267. STCN, 190115130.
