[GARDENS] [Thomas WHATELY ]- The Art of forming modern garde - Lot 392
[GARDENS] [Thomas WHATELY ]- The Art of forming modern gardens, or The art of English gardens. Translated from the anglois. To which the translator has added a preliminary discourse on the origin of the art, notes on the text, & a detailed description of the gardens of Stowe, accompanied by the plan. Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert père, 1771. In-8° : [2], lxiv, 404, [2] pp. 1 pl. (Paper lightly browned in places, including title, browned). Contemporary blond calf, spine ribbed, title page. (Upper headband torn off, several scratches on boards). Rare first French edition of one of the founding texts on the art of English landscape gardening, translated by François de Paule Latapie from the famous Observations on Modern Gardening (London, 1770). The work by Thomas Whately (1726-1772), a politician and writer, is considered a major reference on the English picturesque garden before the writings of Walpole (Essay on Modern Gardening, 1782) or the contributions of Humphry Repton. A key text in the history of the European landscape. Both theoretical and practical, the essay deals clearly with the principles of composition, the effects of perspective, planting, water, factories and garden architecture. It illustrates the emergence of the "Anglo-Chinese" style in the taste of the time. The volume is illustrated with a fold-out plan of the gardens of Stowe House, an emblematic estate of English landscape gardening. Ref. Barbier, I, 289. Ganay, 87. Early handwritten provenance on title: ? de Beaucaire.
