[Louis-Sébastien MERCIER ]- L'An deux mille quatre cent quar - Lot 431
[Louis-Sébastien MERCIER ]- L'An deux mille quatre cent quarante. Rêve s'il en fût jamais; followed by L'homme de fer, songe. New edition with figures. Tome premier [-troisième]. S.l.s.n., 1786. 3 volumes in-8° : xiv (sur xvi), 380, [2] ; [2 (sur 4)], 381, [2-1 bl.] ; [2 (sur 4)], 312, [2] pp. 3 h.-t. (Rous. et brunissures, sans les faux-titres). Half calf with corners, mastic paper boards, richly decorated smooth spine, title and appendices (Small ink stains on 2 boards). 3 h.-t. frontispieces attributed to de Ghendt after Marillier. Second version of the text, enlarged with new chapters and notes, of one of the very first anticipation novels in French literature, originally published in 1771. A true uchronia avant la lettre, "L'An 2440" imagines a futuristic Paris regenerated according to the ideals of the Enlightenment. Mercier envisions a society free of privilege, founded on reason, education, justice and progress. Censored as soon as it was published, but widely distributed in Europe, this visionary text was a huge success. A founding work of the futuristic novel, hailed by Versins (Encyclopédie de l'utopie et de la science-fiction, p. 581) as one of the major milestones of the genre. Ref. Cohen, 701. Cioranescu, 44470. Versins, op. cit. Barbier, I, 161 (ed. 1771). Genre romanesque, 1751-1800, 71.36.
