Tome premier [-second]. Paris, chez tous les marchands de nouveautés, 1788. 2 volumes bound in 1 vol. in-8° : 198 ; 176 pp. (Qqs soiling, foxing or browning, several ff. restored in margin, title defr.). Contemporary calf, smooth spine decorated with flowers, title page. (Worn bindings, epidermal marks, cracked jaws). Unillustrated second edition (the illustrated original appeared in 1787). The authorship of this work is disputed. Barbier, Brunet and Lacroix have attributed it to Restif de La Bretonne. In 1949, J. Rives Childs strongly disputed this, naming Charles-Joseph de Ligne as the author. Pierre Mouriau de Meulenacker refuted this new attribution with forceful arguments, demonstrating that Rives Childs' assertions were unfounded, but without pronouncing on the identity of the author. Ref. Barbier, IV, col. 654. Brunet, V, col. 625. Liesen, Charles-Joseph prince de Ligne, 38. Provenance: Dubois wet stamp on front cover; red stamp on title with initials D. D.
