Translated from the English [by Van Effen]. The Hague, Henri Scheurleer, 1757. 3 volumes in-12 : [8]-xvi-[2]-312, [2]-xii-296, [4]-xvi-280 pp. 8 pl. (One or other rare pox, qqs ff. very slightly browned). Contemporary calf, smooth spine with fleurons, title-pieces, red edges (Epidermures, tom. pages faded). Edition illustrated with 8 etched plates by Andreas Reinhardt jr. (frontispiece, 6 plates in volume I, 1 large plate in volume II illustrating The Battle of the Books), of this great classic of English satire, whose original edition appeared in 1704. The work includes: The Barrel Tale, The Battle of the Books, a Treatise on Ancient Political Dissensions, as well as two short satirical texts attributed to Pope and Arbuthnot. A brilliant allegory of the religious, political and literary debates of the 18th century, this work is part of the quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, and offers a fierce critique of the intellectual world. The title alludes to the maritime ruse of throwing an empty barrel at a whale to divert its attention from the ship - a metaphor for diverting minds away from the real political and social issues at stake. The engraved plate illustrating The Battle of the Books dramatically depicts the symbolic battle between ancient and modern authors in St. James's library, visually embodying Swift's lively, erudite satire.
