[MANUSCRIT] Jules PÉPÈRE, PSEUDO. BY ADOLPHE DUPUIS - CH. MO - Lot 42
[MANUSCRIT] Jules PÉPÈRE, PSEUDO. BY ADOLPHE DUPUIS - CH. MONTIGNY - "From St. Petersburg to Sorrento. Return pleasure trains, journey time 576 hours. Tickets reduced to their simplest expression. For information contact Mr Jules Pépère. Warsaw station; St Petersburg, March 1873". In-4°, [37] ff, India ink and watercolor on watermarked laid paper "Joynson 1871". Several ink and color migrations on the white versos of the full pages, several small stains and marginal russets. Contemporary midnight-blue percaline boards, with bold and lean cold-stamped fillets around the boards, gilt title to upper board. A facetious railway travelogue in the form of a "Poëme unique ! en VII chants" illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings, featuring a color-illustrated title (following the main title), 8 full-page color illustrations and 16 black figures in the text (bandeaux and culs-de-lampe). French actor Dupuis (1824-1891), alias "Pépère", dedicated these "verses de mirliton" to his "Fifille". At the time, he was making a career for himself in St. Petersburg, Russia, accompanying Empress Maria Fedorovna's retinue on their train journey to Italy. It's this journey that our "Pépère" recounts with very little deference. His accomplice's illustrations include caricatures, views of trains and stations, a theater with a few sleeping spectators, the Empress's arrival at the Quarto in Italy (Naples; with a sun drenching the welcoming committee with rain, Vesuvius, the ruins of Pompeii ("rue du vide gousset"), Herculaneum, etc.). In the end, an "Arrêt de la Cour des Beaux-Arts" signed by Corneille, Molière, Racine, Michelangelo, Raphaël and Leonardo da Vinci, condemns the two companions to hanging, represented as a culispice.
