Brugge, vveduwe van I. Clouwet, 1664. 68 pp. Incomplete of the last ff.n.ch. Hybrid copy of the Cocus bonus, first published in 1663. A singular work composed in verse and prose, it is a moral treatise in which Peter Croon, both theologian and cook, establishes allegorical correspondences between vices and virtues and the objects of the kitchen or the dishes served at table. In the second part, the author stages a complete meal: each dish, described in terms of its material qualities or defects, becomes the pretext for a moral and religious meditation - a smoke-blackened ham immediately suggesting an edifying lesson. The little text Keirs en kandelaer snutter..., given as a New Year's gift, is one of these occasional devotional opuscules: a series of moral reflections inspired by the images of candlelight, light and purification, addressed to "friends of light" (lichts-gesinde), in a familiar and edifying vein. Ref. Vicaire, Bibliothèque gastronomique, 222-223.
